Refund playbook

The trial converted.
Recovery is still on the table.

About 6 in 10 trial users miss the cancel deadline at least once a year. The merchants know this and most have a 'forgot to cancel' refund path — they just won't tell you about it.

TL;DR — the short answer
  • Move fast — 48 hours after the charge is the highest-success window.
  • Use the right billing channel: Apple, Google Play, or direct merchant.
  • Cite zero post-trial usage — that single phrase is the strongest unlock.
  • Card-issuer dispute is your backup, not your opener.

Hour 0 – 48: ask the merchant directly

This is the highest-success window. Most SaaS support has clear authority to refund a 'forgot to cancel' charge within 48 hours, often without a manager review. Skip the small talk; lead with the date, amount, and zero-usage line.

Day 3 – 14: escalate gently

Inside two weeks, refund odds stay high but the request needs to look reasonable. Cite zero post-trial usage, the cancellation date (cancel before asking), and the trial wording from their own signup page.

Day 15+: card-issuer dispute

Past two weeks, the merchant-side odds drop. The card-issuer dispute path is faster and more reliable — file under Visa 13.2 (recurring after cancellation) with the cancellation confirmation as evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I dispute a free trial conversion as unauthorized?

Technically no — you authorized the initial transaction, so it's a recurring-billing dispute, not fraud. Filing as fraud can hurt your dispute history.

Will the merchant block my account if I dispute?

Some will. If you may want to use the service again, ask the merchant for a refund first and only dispute if denied.
